What is Fistula?
An anal fistula is an abnormal small tunnel that develops between the inside of the anal canal and the skin near the anus. It commonly develops following an infection or abscess.
A patient may notice repeated swelling, pain or discharge from a small opening near the anus.
Unlike a simple skin wound, an established anal fistula may continue to drain or repeatedly become infected because the abnormal tunnel remains present.
Treatment depends on the location and complexity of the fistula. Persistent fistulas often require a surgical procedure, with careful planning to protect normal bowel control.
